Product, Review and AggregateRating explained

Google uses Product structured data to understand individual products. Review entries describe genuine customer feedback, while AggregateRating summarises eligible ratings and counts. Keep the information tied to the correct product and consistent with what's visible on the page.

  • Product name, product identifiers and canonical URL
  • Genuine rating values and author attribution
  • Aggregate rating and review count based on eligible reviews

How review stars appear in Google Search

Valid review markup can make an individual product URL eligible for review stars in organic results. Google's systems choose when rich snippets appear, and no plugin or schema provider can guarantee them. Marking up a merchant's own business rating is not the same as a product review.

  • Eligibility, not guaranteed star display
  • Single-product pages rather than categories
  • Honest visible reviews, never invented scores

Prevent duplicate schema on WooCommerce and Shopify

Commerce platforms and SEO plugins may already output Product schema. Adding a separate ratings widget without checking the existing markup can cause contradictions. Use one consistent Product graph and test the rendered HTML.

  • Check theme and SEO-plugin markup before injecting review data
  • Use Google's Rich Results Test and Search Console
  • Align product variants, offers and review data

Google Shopping is a separate ratings channel

Product review structured data on your site and the review feeds used for Google Shopping are not interchangeable. Shopping Product Ratings uses Merchant Center review sources and accurate product matching. Google Store Ratings are another programme again.

  • Organic search: Product structured data
  • Google Shopping: Merchant Center Product Ratings reviews feed
  • Store Ratings: separate merchant-experience programme

The details matter

A reliable product review SEO checklist

  • Use genuine review data

Keep reviews accurate, attributed, visible and relevant to the product being reviewed.

  • Show the review count

AggregateRating should reflect eligible reviews associated with the actual product.

  • Avoid duplicate JSON-LD

Coordinate with WooCommerce, Shopify and existing SEO markup.

  • Validate rendered markup

Use Google's Rich Results Test and Merchant Listings reports in Search Console.

  • Keep pages crawlable

Search engines need accessible product information, not content locked inside inaccessible UI.

  • Connect Shopping feeds

Merchant Center Product Ratings uses review data sources, GTIN and product identifiers.

Frequently asked questions

Will a reviews plugin guarantee stars in Google?

No. Valid Product and AggregateRating structured data makes eligible content easier for Google to understand, but rich snippets are entirely at Google's discretion.

What schema do product reviews need?

Google's Product snippet documentation supports Review and AggregateRating properties associated with a specific product. Use the required fields, consistent product identifiers and genuine on-page feedback.

Can I add stars to my homepage schema?

Review rich results for ecommerce products should represent specific product reviews. Self-serving business ratings generally do not qualify for LocalBusiness/Organization review stars.

Is Google Shopping Product Ratings the same as organic stars?

No. Google Shopping uses Merchant Center review sources and product matching. On-page JSON-LD mainly supports product-rich result eligibility in Google Search.

Does an iframe guarantee Google can index reviews?

No. SEO-critical review text should be available in crawlable page content or suitable rendered markup. A hosted iframe alone is not equivalent to product-specific server-rendered schema.
